August 4, 2026: India's energy import dependence is back in focus after the Union government cleared a major offshore exploration push that officials say could reshape the country's hydrocarbons map over the next few years.

Union petroleum and natural gas minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said the newly approved Samudra Manthan scheme may help the country save about ₹1000 billion every year by reducing crude oil and natural gas imports. The minister, speaking in Siddharthnagar in Uttar Pradesh, framed the initiative as a decisive step towards energy self-reliance, according to ANI and ETEnergyworld.

Puri said India currently spends roughly $150 billion a year on imports of crude oil and natural gas. That dependence, he argued, remains a structural drag even as the economy expands and energy demand rises. He also said the country's energy consumption is about three times the global average, making domestic exploration and production more urgent from both a fiscal and strategic perspective.

The minister's comments matter because energy imports remain one of India's largest external vulnerabilities. A lower import bill would not only ease pressure on the current account but could also reduce exposure to volatility in global oil and gas prices, which have repeatedly unsettled budgets, inflation projections and industrial costs.
